Is it necessary for the personal representative to live in the decedent’s state?

It depends on the laws of the state, but usually isn’t an absolute requirement.

However it is usually easier – especially regarding larger estates and cases involving real estate.

In many states, extra rules apply when the personal representative lives out of state.  Please consult with a probate attorney who is licensed in the state where the decedent died to find out the local rules.
